Terms of Use

The agreement that governs your use of Confessionals.

Effective date · 2026-05-25

1. Agreement to these terms

These Terms of Use ("Terms") form a binding agreement between you and Lemillion LLC, a Virginia limited liability company (SCC ID 12016863) doing business as Confessionals ("we," "us," "our"), with its principal office at 4446 Elan Pl, Annandale, VA 22003-5735, governing your use of the Confessionals mobile application and any related services ("the Service").

By creating an account, signing in as a guest, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

If you are using the Service on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization to these Terms. (For nearly all users this is just yourself.)

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service (16 in jurisdictions where a higher minimum applies under GDPR). The Service is rated 12+ on the App Store and includes occasional mature themes consistent with the spiritual subject matter.

To make a paid subscription purchase, you must be of legal age to enter contracts in your jurisdiction (typically 18 in the United States), and you must use a valid Apple ID or Google account that meets that age requirement.

The Service is not intended for use by anyone barred from receiving software under U.S. export control or sanctions law.

3. License grant

We grant you a personal, limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use the Service on devices you own or control, subject to these Terms. This license is for personal, non-commercial use only.

You may not:

  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code or system prompts of the Service, except where this restriction is prohibited by law
  • Modify, adapt, or create derivative works based on the Service
  • Distribute, sublicense, sell, lease, or rent the Service to any third party
  • Use the Service to build a competing product or to train another machine-learning system
  • Use any automated means (bots, scrapers, scripted clients) to interact with the Service
  • Remove, obscure, or alter any proprietary notices in the Service

4. Account registration and security

You may use the Service either as a registered user (with email and password) or as a guest (anonymous account managed by your device). You are responsible for the activity that occurs under your account, including keeping your password confidential. Notify us at security@confessionals.app immediately if you suspect unauthorized access.

If you sign up as a guest, your account is tied to your device. We cannot recover guest accounts; if you uninstall the app or change devices without converting to a registered account, your data is gone.

5. Subscriptions and billing

The Service offers a free tier and two paid subscription tiers.

5.1 Free tier

You may use up to 3 confession sessions per calendar month at no cost. The free tier may be modified or removed at our discretion with at least 30 days' notice for active users.

5.2 Paid plans

PlanPriceRenewal
MonthlyUS$10 / monthAuto-renews monthly
YearlyUS$80 / yearAuto-renews yearly

Prices in your local currency are shown in the app and may differ from these amounts due to currency conversion, regional pricing, and tax. Apple and Google determine the exact price you see and pay.

5.3 Billing and auto-renewal

  • All payments are processed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play), not by us. We never see your payment instrument.
  • Subscriptions auto-renew at the end of each billing period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends.
  • To cancel, use your device's subscription management — iOS: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions; Android: Play Store → Profile → Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions. Canceling stops future billing; you keep access until the end of the current period.
  • Refunds are handled by Apple or Google per their respective policies. We cannot issue refunds directly. To request one, follow the platform's process — Apple at https://reportaproblem.apple.com or Google Play Help.

5.4 Free trials and promotions

We may offer free trials or promotional pricing from time to time. Trials convert to paid subscriptions automatically at the end of the trial unless you cancel before then. Each user is eligible for at most one free trial per plan.

5.5 Price changes

If we change subscription pricing, we will notify you in advance through the Service or by email, and the new price will only apply to your next billing period. You can always cancel before the new price takes effect.

6. The AI Companion — important disclaimers

The Service includes an AI-driven spiritual companion (referred to in the app as "Living Scripture"). You acknowledge and agree:

  • The AI is not a priest, pastor, deacon, counselor, therapist, doctor, or any other licensed professional. It administers no sacrament. In Catholic teaching, valid sacramental confession requires a validly ordained priest; this Service cannot fulfill that requirement. The Orthodox tradition has its own canonical requirements which the Service likewise cannot fulfill. Protestant pastoral relationships are similarly outside the Service's scope.
  • The AI's responses are not authoritative theological, moral, medical, legal, or psychological advice. They are generated by a large language model and may be inaccurate, incomplete, or inappropriate to your situation. Verify anything important against trusted human sources within your tradition.
  • The AI may produce content that surprises or troubles you. Despite content-safety measures, AI systems can occasionally produce off-tone, offensive, or factually wrong text. If this happens, end the session and let us know at support@confessionals.app.
  • Use of the AI sends your messages to a third-party model provider (currently Anthropic, PBC). See our Privacy Policy for what that means for your data.

7. Crisis content

The Service includes a basic safety layer that detects messages indicating risk of suicide, self-harm, or harm to others, and surfaces relevant crisis-resource information (e.g., 988 in the United States, Samaritans in the UK).

The Service is not an emergency response system. It does not contact emergency services on your behalf, does not notify any third party, and is not a substitute for professional mental-health care. If you are in immediate danger, please contact emergency services directly (911 in the US) or a crisis hotline.

8. Your content

"Your Content" means anything you submit through the Service — confession session text, examination answers, prayer titles, gratitude metadata, and beta feedback.

  • You retain all rights to Your Content. We do not claim ownership.
  • You grant us a limited license to process Your Content as necessary to operate the Service for you (e.g., transmitting your confession session to our AI provider so it can generate a response). This license terminates when you delete the relevant content or your account.
  • We do not use Your Content to train AI models, build advertising profiles, or sell data.
  • You are responsible for Your Content. You represent that you have the right to share it and that it does not violate these Terms or applicable law.

We do not pre-screen Your Content but reserve the right to remove anything we believe violates these Terms or harms others.

9. Acceptable use

You agree not to use the Service to:

  • Violate any law or the rights of others
  • Submit content that is illegal, harassing, defamatory, or that infringes intellectual property
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to other users' accounts or to our systems
  • Interfere with or disrupt the Service (e.g., DoS attacks, malicious payloads)
  • Misrepresent your identity or impersonate another person
  • Use the Service for any commercial purpose without our written permission
  • Probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of the Service except through a coordinated disclosure to security@confessionals.app

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate this section.

10. Our intellectual property

The Service — including its design, code, AI prompts, content, trademarks, logos, and the name "Confessionals" — is owned by us or our licensors and protected by intellectual property laws. Nothing in these Terms transfers any of those rights to you, except for the limited license granted in Section 3.

Scripture text displayed in the Service is sourced from translations licensed for this purpose. Public-domain translations (e.g., King James Version) carry no restriction; copyrighted translations (e.g., NABRE, RSV-CE) are used under license from their publishers.

10.1 Copyright complaints (DMCA)

If you believe content available through the Service infringes your copyright, send a notice meeting the requirements of 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3) to legal@confessionals.app, or by mail to: Lemillion LLC, Attn: DMCA Agent, 4446 Elan Pl, Annandale, VA 22003-5735. Counter-notices may be sent to the same address. We will terminate the accounts of users determined to be repeat infringers.

11. Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

We do not warrant that:

  • The Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free
  • The AI will produce accurate, reliable, or appropriate output
  • Defects will be corrected
  • The Service is free of viruses or other harmful components

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, in which case the above exclusion applies only to the extent permitted.

12. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT WILL WE BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, GOODWILL, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO YOUR USE OF (OR INABILITY TO USE) THE SERVICE.

OUR TOTAL LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING FROM OR RELATING TO THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO LIABILITY, OR (B) US$50.

These limits apply regardless of the legal theory (contract, tort, or otherwise), even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages, and even if a remedy fails of its essential purpose.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law (such as gross negligence, willful misconduct, or, in some jurisdictions, personal injury).

13. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claim, demand, loss, or expense (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of (a) your breach of these Terms, (b) your violation of any law or third-party right, or (c) Your Content. We will notify you of any such claim and may, at our option, control the defense.

14. Governing law and dispute resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply.

14.1 Informal resolution first

Before filing any claim, you agree to contact us at support@confessionals.app and try to resolve the dispute informally for at least 30 days. Most disputes can be resolved this way.

14.2 Binding arbitration

If informal resolution fails, any dispute arising from or relating to these Terms or the Service will be resolved by final and binding individual arbitration administered by JAMS under its Streamlined Arbitration Rules, in Fairfax County, Virginia, or by video conference where available. The arbitrator's decision is final and enforceable in any court of competent jurisdiction.

14.3 Class-action waiver

YOU AND WE EACH WAIVE THE RIGHT TO BRING OR PARTICIPATE IN A CLASS ACTION, COLLECTIVE ACTION, OR REPRESENTATIVE PROCEEDING. Disputes will only be resolved on an individual basis.

14.4 Exceptions

You may always bring an individual claim in small-claims court for matters within that court's jurisdiction. Either party may seek injunctive relief in court for intellectual property infringement or unauthorized access without first arbitrating.

14.5 Opt-out

You may opt out of arbitration (Sections 14.2 and 14.3) by emailing legal@confessionals.app within 30 days of first creating an account, with the subject line "Arbitration Opt-Out" and your account email in the body. Opting out has no effect on the rest of these Terms.

15. Termination

You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time (Settings → Account → Delete Account, or by emailing privacy@confessionals.app).

We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms, if required by law, or if we discontinue the Service. We will give reasonable advance notice for non-violation terminations.

Upon termination:

  • Your access ends
  • Your server-side data is deleted per our retention schedule
  • Any subscription is canceled per Section 5
  • Sections 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 16 survive termination

16. Apple-specific terms (iOS only)

These additional terms apply if you obtained the Service from the Apple App Store and are required by Apple's developer guidelines:

  • These Terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the Service or its content.
  • Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the Service.
  • If the Service fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, who will refund the purchase price; Apple has no other warranty obligation.
  • Apple is not responsible for product liability claims, third-party intellectual property claims, or claims relating to legal/regulatory compliance.
  • Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.

17. Google Play–specific terms (Android only)

These additional terms apply if you obtained the Service from Google Play:

  • These Terms are between you and us, not Google.
  • Google is not responsible for the Service or any claims relating to it.
  • You agree to comply with the Google Play Terms of Service alongside these Terms.

18. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms occasionally. When we make material changes, we will:

  • Post the updated Terms with a new "Last updated" date
  • Notify you in-app and, if you are registered, by email at least 14 days before the new Terms take effect
  • For changes that affect your rights, give you a meaningful opportunity to cancel before they apply

Continued use of the Service after the effective date of updated Terms constitutes acceptance.

19. Miscellaneous

  • Entire agreement. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Service.
  • Severability. If any provision is held unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.
  • No waiver. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of our right to do so later.
  • Assignment. You may not assign these Terms. We may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
  • Force majeure. We are not liable for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
  • Notices. Legal notices to us must be sent to legal@confessionals.app; notices to you may be by email or in-app message.
